ROOT CANAL AFTERCARE

Many people dread the idea of a root canal, and yet it is such a tremendously beneficial treatment. Not only does it bring considerable pain and discomfort to a fast end, but it also allows you to keep the tooth. Losing adult teeth is harmful to the health of your mouth and your body, and so it is important to see a root canal as a good option, and to know proper root canal aftercare. Patients of Wagner Dentistry in Summerlin and Las Vegas Area, NV can turn to us for root canals and other endodontics, as well as tips for proper aftercare.

A root canal typically involves two visits to the office. The first is to perform the actual root canal, and the second is to place a new dental crown to protect the remainder of the natural crown. What this means is that there is root canal aftercare necessary in between the appointments, and aftercare once the entire process is done.

The first part of root canal aftercare requires that you treat your temporary crown with care. This is protecting the actual root canal and original crown, and to ensure it remains firmly in place you will want to chew on the opposite side of the mouth and eat a very soft diet until the permanent crown is placed. You will need to be careful when brushing, but you will be back for the new crown within a week of treatment.

The remainder of the aftercare begins when the permanent crown is placed. To begin with, you will have to keep in mind that your tooth will be a bit sensitive for a few days or weeks, but this sensitivity subsides after only a short time. If it is severe, we can prescribe treatments that will reduce any discomfort.

The next part of aftercare involves observation, and you must keep track of the comfort of your bite. Does it feel normal or is it very different? A misaligned bite can cause many issues, and aftercare of a root canal means being aware of discomfort in the alignment of your upper and lower teeth.

Finally, once the permanent crown is placed, you must practice good oral hygiene. Twice daily brushing and flossing is essential, and twice annual exams and cleanings are important. This ensures the root canal was a success, that the tooth is healthy and that nothing has occurred in the months after the treatment.
