Dental Implants FAQs
At Wagner Dentistry in Summerlin and Las Vegas, one of the topics that generates a lot of questions from our patients is that of dental implants. These FAQs should answer most of your questions, but if you have others, do not hesitate to get in touch with us.
Q: Does dental implant surgery hurt?
A: No. Your dentist will give you a local anesthetic so that you will not experience pain during the surgery. After the anesthetic wears off, you might have a bit of discomfort, but it can usually be managed using ibuprofen or a similar product.
Q: Does the surgery take a long time?
A: The time involved can vary depending on how many implants are being installed and where they are to be placed, but usually, you can expect the surgery to be over within under an hour.
Q: How long do I have to wait before I can eat?
A: This could vary from patient to patient. Typically, you can eat fairly soon after the surgery, although you should try to avoid having food come into contact with the surgical site, and you will probably have to stick to soft foods for awhile.
Q: How long does it take to heal?
A: The average healing period before your permanent crowns can be installed is six months. However, it could be as little as two months, or as long as nine.
Q: How long will dental implants last?
A: If you properly care for your implants, they will likely outlast you.
Q: Is there a possibility of rejection?
A: Yes, but it is a very slight possibility. There is a remote chance of a patient being allergic to titanium, in which case, the implant would have to be removed. Once in a while, an implant fails to fuse, either due to infection or because fibrous tissue has grown around it. If this happens, the implant is taken out, and once the site heals, your implant dentist will redo the surgery.
Q: Are dental implants very expensive?
Dental implants are the most expensive means of replacing missing teeth. However, since they last forever, they can actually end up being more cost-effective than other methods.
