DENTAL BRIDGES FAQS
If you have been debating the merits of dental bridges as a means of replacing missing teeth, you can refer to these dental bridges FAQs to get the answers you need.
WHAT ARE DENTAL BRIDGES?
Dental bridges are devices that replace missing teeth by using the teeth on either side of the gap as supports for prosthetic teeth. There are different kinds of dental bridges, but regardless of the type, a dental bridge is custom-fit to suit the individual patient. The supporting natural teeth have to be properly shaped and fitted with crowns in order to support the bridge.
WHEN ARE DENTAL BRIDGES APPROPRIATE?
If you are missing even a single tooth, or several teeth in sequence, you can benefit from a dental bridge.
WILL DENTAL BRIDGES SLIP OR SLIDE?
Permanent dental bridges that are anchored by your adjacent teeth are fixed in place, and will not slip or slide. You can eat the foods you enjoy without having to worry about difficulty or embarrassment.
ARE THERE ANY COMPLICATIONS FROM DENTAL BRIDGES?
There are not usually any complications resulting from the installation of dental bridges. Of course any time a procedure is undertaken then affects your gums, there can be a risk of inflammation or infection, but such an occurrence is unlikely. Some people may have allergies to the materials used to make dental bridges, but again, this is rare.
ARE THERE ALTERNATIVES TO DENTAL BRIDGES?
Dental implants are the best solution for missing teeth, but your dental insurer is unlikely to cover them. Most insurers, though, will cover at least part of the cost for dental bridges. The advantage to implants is that they do not affect the adjacent teeth, and they do not have to be replaced. Bridges my need to be modified or replaced at some point.
If you have several missing teeth, or if you anticipate losing more teeth in the near future, and implants are not an option for you, then you may prefer to have your remaining teeth taken out, and have a set of dentures created for you.
