TOOTH EXTRACTION FAQS
If you need a tooth extraction, whether it is for one of your typical teeth or for a wisdom tooth, you almost certainly have questions and concerns. These tooth extraction FAQs will address many of the issues that may be troubling you.
DO I NEED TO BE REFERRED TO A SPECIALIST FOR A WISDOM TOOTH EXTRACTION?
Not always. Many dentists perform wisdom tooth extractions as a part of their ordinary general dentistry practice.
DO I NEED X-RAYS?
Any time that a dentist is doing something that will affect what is going on under your gum line, x-rays will have to be taken. If your dentist needs to refer you to a specialist for the extraction, as could be the case for a wisdom tooth extraction, then the dentist will send your current x-rays to the specialist. If your dental x-rays are not recent, then you can have new x-rays taken when you see the specialist.
DO I NEED TO BE DRIVEN HOME FOLLOWING THE TOOTH EXTRACTION?
You will only need to be have somebody drive you home if you have been sedated during the extraction. If it is done using a local anesthetic, then you can take yourself home.
CAN I EAT BEFORE THE EXTRACTION?
If the procedure is done using a local anesthetic, then you can eat beforehand. If you are going to be sedated, though, you should avoid eating or drinking beforehand.
CAN I GET AN INFECTION FROM A TOOTH EXTRACTION?
Yes, but it is rare. Dentists always use sterile instruments and wash their hands thoroughly before any procedure.
WILL MY DENTAL INSURANCE COVER AN EXTRACTION?
Dental insurance will almost always cover at least part of the cost of your extraction.
IF I AM ON MEDICATION, CAN I TAKE IT AS USUAL?
Let your dentist know what medications you are taking (be sure to include herbal remedies as well). The dentist will let you know if you should stop using any of them before the extraction.
WILL THERE BE MUCH BLOOD?
When you have a tooth extraction, there will be some bleeding, but it should be easily managed by biting down on special pads your dentist will give you.
